Monomorium is a very large genera of ants, having around 300 known species. Most Monomorium are from the African tropics but perhaps the most well known is Monomorium pharaonis (The Pharaoh Ant) which is considered a pest in its Western range. They belong to the Solenopsidini tribe.
The Monomorium worker caste is monomorphic in some species and polymorphic in others. Large, multifaceted eyes are common in this genera, and the sting is always functional.
