Home > Species > Mantids as insect pets

Mantids are often erronously reffered to as "praying mantis", which in fact refers to only a single species, Mantis religiosa.

Mantids make great insect pets, I'm currently keeping some Hierodula grandis (Giant Asian Mantis) nymphs which I hope I can get a breeding pair from.

This species is native to North East India and grows up to 100mm long making it one of the few insects capable of eating small birds, reptiles and mammals.

In captivity it is easiest to raise small nymphs on fruit flies and larger nymphs and adults on crickets and cockroaches.

Stay tunned as a one of the Giant Asian Mantids could be making a webcam appearance soon.
