Formica exsecta is a species of Wood Ant found in Western Europe and China, first described by Nylander in 1846.
It is sometimes known as the narrow-headed ant and builds large dome shaped nests above ground which tend to be finer materials than those chosen by the other Wood Ants.
In Great Britain, F. exsecta is only found only in a few scattered heathland locations in South West England and in the central Scottish Highlands (namely Rannoch Moor).
