Formica cunicularia is a mining ant of the Formica fusca group. F. cunicularia's distribution is thought to be limited to southern England

The difference between cunicularia and Formica rufibarbis is slight, although F. cunicularia red markings are far less conspicuous.

F. cunicularia, frequently forms noticeable hillocks over its nests, and in addition to these produces runs in the vicinity of its nest.
