Formica aquilonia is a species of wood ant of the genus Formica which is distributed throughout Europe including throughout the pinewoods of the Highlands. Despite being locally populous, it has an IUCN status of 'Near Threatened'.
F. aquilonia lives mainly in coniferous forests but they can occur in deciduous woodlands.
