Eciton burchellii is a New World species of army ant and one of only two that sends out large swarming raiding parties above ground. It is the only species that creates temporary bivouacs above ground in piles of brush, or inside logs and tree trunks.
Over 300 species, ranging from birds to tiny mites, depend partly on E. burchellii - this species of ant supports a greater number of other life forms than any other known species.
