Camponotus americanus, the American Carpenter Ant. This ant occurs in dry prairie and oak savanna as well as closed woodlands. It nests deep in soil, usually independent of an external covering, but occasionally builds a large chamber beneath a stone, bark slab or wood in the early stages of decomposition.
Foraging is mainly nocturnal and the habits of this ant are thus largely unknown.
