'Ant swarms' can refer to a number of ant behaviours. In common usage, this term refers to the summer phenomenon of large 'clouds' of flying ants. These are the winged forms of a colony and are the sexually reproductive ants performing the nuptial flights or marriage flights.
The ants mate midair, the males perish and the females found new colonies and become 'queens', - the colony figure head.
