Home > Frequently Asked Questions > Can ants smell?

Ants 'smell' with their antennae. When they touch each other, when they touch the ground, food sources and other objects, they are, in fact, smelling. Ants operate in a world of smell. They secrete a variety of chemicals and use these chemicals to communicate. These are pheromones, chemicals excreted through glands and perceived externally.

All members of as colony have the same chemical odour, a colony signature.
