When ants emerge from their winter slumber depends on a great deal of factors for wild ants. Latitude being perhaps the most significant factor but localised climate variation could be a factor.
I live 55° north of the equator where the average high temperature doesn't tend to exceed 10°C until mid-April, so I won't see ants walking around on the surface until then unless we have a particularly warm spell.
Generally speaking though, Lasius niger (the Black Garden Ant) will come out of its hibernation state on mainland Britain in early Spring.
