A 75-year-old man escaped death after being bitten by ants in the northeast of Victorian state of Australia.

According to a media report, the victim was in a critical condition after being bitten by ants in the town of Wandiligong in Victoria's Alpine region today.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the victim tried to use his allergy medication, which failed him.

He was later taken to a hospital in Bright and was expected to be flown to a hospital in Melbourne for further treatment.

But while waiting for the helicopter to arrive, paramedics were able to stabilise him.

"It didn't look good at all. He was in a critical condition, Mullen said, adding he had a remarkable recovery and the air ambulance was called off.

He was taken by road to the Wangaratta hospital for further observation. He was pretty lucky" Mullen said.
