The western African country of Nigeria covers over 356,000 square miles and is located on the Gulf of Guinea.
Nigeria has a varied landscape. The highest point in Nigeria is Chappal Waddi at 2,419 m. The far south is defined by its tropical rainforest climate, where annual rainfall is over 2,000 mm. There is mangrove swamp (saltwater) and fresh water swamp.
Nigeria is regarded as a crucially important center for biodiversity. It is widely believed that the areas surrounding Calabar, Cross River State, contain the world's largest diversity of butterflies, for example.
The ant fauna is representative of the other diversity; there are currently 1705 species of ants known from the Afrotropical region and over 50 have been identified within Nigeria itself.
