Ants aren't just present in food webs in a trivial way, predating animals and dispersing plant seeds; there are thousands of trillions of individual ants at any one time and this biomass saturates the terrestrial environment. Ants influence and even direct the evolution of countless other animals and plants.

Worldwide, ants move more soil than earthworms, this influences ecosystems in profound ways.

More than 300 species of animal have been identified to depend, in part, on a single species of army ant (Eciton burchellii) for their continued survival.
