Oleic acid is a colourless fatty acid found in various animals and vegetables (it makes up over 40% of peanut oil, for instance).

Additionally, Oleic acid is emitted by the decaying corpses of a number of insects, including bees and ants. It is thought to have evolved as a "death recognition system". The system is effective as fatty acids are reliably and rapidly released from cells following death.
