AntBlog has been on the web since August 2008 and we're building a community for hobby Myrmecologists. The feature blog and most of the site content (where not otherwise credited) is authored by Richard Smith.
We advocate the collection of ants where the local populous is strong enough to support it, such as with Lasius niger in the UK and encourage the collection of modest numbers of mated queens from mating flights where the wild survival rate is very low. We believe understanding is the key to conservation, and also promote conservation as a stand-alone cause.
AntBlog is growing steadily. 2009 has so far brought us 6,000 unique visitors from over 100 countries/territories. As well as the UK, the site is proving to be extremely popular in the US, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, India and Spain.
The webcams have been down over the winter period, we hope to return to live broadcasts in the summer.
AntBlog is a database-driven site and the content (individual pages) is created dynamically. This is great, because it means that we can offer you five different ways to use the site and access the 100 pages of content now available.
1. Most new visitors will use the side-panel and navigate using the Featured Content links.
2. Return visitors can use the What's New? links on the side-panel to see the most recently updated pages.
3. The RSS Feed link on the top-panel allows you to subscribe to the main blog. Updates to the blog will appear in your favourites/bookmarks as they go live on the site. All blog updates are posted at 00:00 GMT.
4. Most blog entries and articles on AntBlog have Tags: clicking a tag will display all related pages.
5. There is also a Search which will find pages that mention the search word. The search is less effective at retrieving related pages than using the tag links.
BeeBlog follows the development of a colony of European Honey Bees caught in July 2008, being maintained by beekeeper Jane Vaughan. It promotes conservation and understanding of bees in general.
